REPUBLIC OF ECUADOR
BILATERAL RELATIONSHIPS
The Republic of Ecuador is a country in South America known for its numerous specificities. The terrain of Ecuador is extremely diverse and includes the Amazonian jungle, the peaks of the Andes, and the low-lying coastal area. Besides Chile, it is the only country in South America that does not border Brazil. The Galapagos Islands, located about a thousand kilometers to the west, belong to Ecuador, where Charles Darwin laid the foundations of the theory of evolution, and which today are at the top of the UNESCO World Heritage List. Ecuador is very rich in flora and fauna, it has a large number of endemic species, which is why the Constitution of Ecuador, adopted in 2008, defined the rights of nature for the first time by law, i.e. ecosystem rights. This country, where it is possible to stand with one foot in the southern hemisphere and the other in the northern hemisphere, has the highest density of volcanoes in the world, the highest active volcano in the world, Cotopaxi, and a coastline of 2,237 kilometers on the Pacific Ocean.
State regulation
Ecuador is a presidential republic that gained independence from Spain in 1809 and from Gran Colombia in 1830. It covers 283,520 km². The capital city of Quito, located at an altitude of 2,850 m above sea level, is also the highest capital city in the world, with exceptionally well-preserved colonial architecture, which is why it is in second place on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Interestingly, there are only two seasons in this city, summer (dry season) and winter (rainy season).
The official language is Spanish, which is spoken by about 94% of the open and friendly population. In addition to Spanish, Kichwa, Shuar, and eleven other languages are also in official use.
Bilateral relations between Serbia and Ecuador were established in 1956 and are traditionally friendly and without open issues.
Economy
In addition to oil, which was the center of Ecuador’s economy in the 20th century, bananas and sugar are exported. In the last decade, Ecuador has invested a lot in eco-tourism on the fringes of the rainforest and has set new standards in navigation on the rivers of the Amazon. The currency of Ecuador is the US dollar to reduce the economic crisis.
Culture
Like many other South American countries, the culture of Ecuador is a combination of Spanish and Indian culture, which was also influenced by the culture of African slaves. The most famous part of Ecuadorian culture is the specific music and handmade items, although when visiting Ecuador, getting to know the Inca culture is unavoidable.
Kitchen
The cuisine of Ecuador is very diverse. It contains a lot of corn, beans, rice, fish, chicken, fruits, and vegetables, as well as numerous spices. Canelazo ecuatoriano, a local drink that is a mixture of liqueur, cinnamon, and sugar, is offered as a welcome.
